커버레터 구성과 톤

1. 커버레터란 무엇인가

커버레터는 Resume와 함께 제출하는 1페이지 분량의 설득 편지입니다. Resume가 "무엇을 했는가"를 보여준다면, 커버레터는 "왜 이 회사에서 이 역할을 원하는가"와 "왜 내가 적합한가"를 설득합니다. 잘 쓴 커버레터는 평범한 Resume를 돋보이게 만들고, 면접 초대 확률을 높입니다.

커버레터가 선택(optional)이라고 쓰여 있어도 제출하는 것이 유리합니다. 제출하지 않으면 기회를 스스로 줄이는 셈입니다. 단, 온라인 ATS 지원 시스템에서 입력란이 없다면 생략합니다.

2. 커버레터 4단락 구조

단락 1. OPENING — 강렬한 첫 문장 + 지원 포지션 명시
  • 어떤 포지션에 지원하는지
  • 왜 이 회사인지 (구체적, 진부한 표현 금지)
  • 핵심 강점 1가지로 흥미 유발

단락 2. BODY 1 — 가장 관련성 높은 경험·성과
  • Resume에서 1~2개 핵심 성과를 스토리로 확장
  • "이 역할의 요구사항 X에 대해 나는 Y를 해봤습니다"

단락 3. BODY 2 — 회사와 역할에 대한 관심·이해
  • 회사의 미션·제품·최근 동향 언급
  • "내가 이 팀에 기여할 수 있는 방법"

단락 4. CLOSING — 감사 인사 + 행동 요청(CTA)
  • 면접 기회 요청
  • 연락처 재확인
  • 정중하고 자신감 있는 마무리

3. 도입부 — 흔한 실수와 강력한 대안

❌ 진부한 시작 (절대 금지):
  "I am writing to express my interest in the Software Engineer
   position at your company."
  → 누구나 다 쓰는 표현. 채용 담당자가 즉시 읽기를 멈춤.

✅ 강렬한 시작 예시:
  "When Stripe announced its expansion into Southeast Asia last
   year, I immediately thought: this is the team I want to be on.
   With 5 years of experience building high-throughput payment
   APIs at Kakao Pay, I believe I can help scale this mission."

  "I built my first React application when the library had just
   launched — and I have been following Vercel's journey to
   reinvent frontend deployment ever since. That passion, combined
   with my experience leading a 4-person front-end team at Naver,
   makes this Senior Engineer role a natural next step for me."

4. 회사명 리서치 — 맞춤형 커버레터 작성법

채용 담당자는 복붙된 Generic 커버레터를 즉시 알아봅니다. 각 회사마다 다음 요소를 조사해 커버레터에 반영하세요.

조사할 항목:
  ✅ 회사 미션·비전 (About Us 페이지)
  ✅ 최근 뉴스·블로그 포스트·제품 업데이트
  ✅ 직접 사용해본 제품 경험
  ✅ 채용 포지션의 팀 이름·팀장 이름 (LinkedIn)
  ✅ 회사가 해결하려는 문제

활용 예시:
  "Your recent blog post on migrating from monolith to
   microservices architecture at scale resonated deeply
   with challenges I faced while leading the API platform
   team at LINE."

5. 수신인 표기와 인사말

최선: 채용 담당자 이름 파악
  → LinkedIn에서 회사명 + "Recruiter" 또는 "Talent Acquisition" 검색
  → "Dear Ms. Johnson," 또는 "Dear Alex Chen,"

이름 모를 때:
  → "Dear Hiring Manager,"            (가장 일반적)
  → "Dear [팀명] Team,"               (예: "Dear Engineering Team,")
  → "Dear [회사명] Recruiting Team,"

절대 금지:
  ❌ "To Whom It May Concern,"        — 지나치게 격식적, 구식
  ❌ "Dear Sir or Madam,"             — 성별 가정, 구식
  ❌ "Hey there," / "Hello!"          — 너무 캐주얼

6. 커버레터 실전 예시 전문

Dear Hiring Manager,
